Dear Readers, As one might imagine, I have been feeling more nostalgic and reflective as Evie's first birthday is around the corner. In recent days and weeks, little milestones have occurred that make me think about the importance of this birthday. We almost made it out of infancy and into toddlerhood. As far as gifts, we're not big believers in overloading each other and our kid with "stuff" that has no meaning. Instead, we tend to be more practical with money, invest in memorable experiences or uniquely personalized items. We want to use every special occasion to put money in her account. In the old days, they called it the "college fund." For now, we'll call it "the future." Now for the fun and personized part.

We feel a calling to have a star named after Evie. For a few reasons. As a writer, I love the symbolism and the inspiration it provides. Both Nick and I appreciate the wonder, awe, mystery and beauty of the solar system. And we like supporting scientific research in general so we feel this is a perfect gift for our little girl. We will frame the star certificate in her room and will one day explain the meaning behind that piece of paper on the wall. I like the permanence and symbolism of registering a star in Evie's name. Our reference point for moving in the right direction, even when life's obstacles try to block our path. With the help of technology, we can always look up at the sky and be reminded of our purpose in the world and have inspiration for every major decision we need to make. She is our North Star.
